If you’ve been researching dental procedures, you may have come across the term biocompatible materials or metal-free dentistry. It sounds impressive, but what does it actually mean for you and your health? At its heart, it’s about choosing dental restorations, fillings, crowns, even implants, that work in harmony with your body rather than potentially causing irritation or sensitivity.
As a practice that’s been serving this community for over thirty years, we’ve seen a real shift in how patients think about their dental care. People are asking more thoughtful questions, and we love that. So if you’re curious about what’s actually going into your mouth, here are five questions you should feel empowered to ask any dentist.

1. “What Materials Do You Use for Fillings, and Why?”
This is a great place to start. For years, amalgam (silver) fillings were the standard. They’re durable, but they contain mercury and other metals, which some patients prefer to avoid. In our office, we’ve been metal-free for years. We use composite resin fillings that bond directly to the tooth. They’re strong, they look completely natural, and there’s no metal involved. If you’re having a cavity filled, ask what’s going in your tooth, and why that choice was made.
2. “Are There Any Materials You Avoid, and Why?”
This question tells you a lot about a dentist’s philosophy. For us, we avoid metals entirely. That means no amalgam fillings, no metal-based crowns, and even our dental implants are made from ceramic, not titanium. Why? Because we take a whole-body approach. Some patients have sensitivities to metals that can cause inflammation over time. By using biocompatible materials from the start, we’re supporting your overall wellness, not just your smile.
3. “How Do You Determine What’s Biocompatible for Me Personally?”
Biocompatibility isn’t one-size-fits-all. What works beautifully for one patient might not be the best fit for another. In our practice, we consider your health history, any known sensitivities or allergies, and your long-term goals. If you’ve ever had a reaction to jewelry metals or have autoimmune concerns, that’s information we want to know. A good dentist will treat you as an individual, not a checklist.
4. “What’s the Lifespan of These Materials?”
Natural is great, but you also want restorations that last. Composite fillings, when properly placed and cared for, can last a decade or more. Ceramic implants and crowns are incredibly durable; many will last a lifetime with good oral hygiene. We’re always honest with our patients: every material has trade-offs. But modern metal-free options have come so far in strength and longevity that you don’t have to choose between health and durability.
5. “Do You Use the Same Approach for Implants and Larger Restorations?”
This is where it gets really interesting. A lot of offices offer metal-free fillings but still use titanium implants or metal-fused porcelain crowns. There’s nothing wrong with that approach, but if you’re looking for a fully metal-free, biocompatible experience, it’s worth asking. At our institute, we use ceramic implants, which integrate beautifully with the jawbone and contain no metal. For crowns, we use high-strength ceramics that look and feel like natural teeth.
Why These Questions Matter
Your mouth isn’t separate from the rest of your body. Everything we place in your mouth, from a small filling to a full-arch restoration, becomes part of your body’s environment. Taking the time to understand the materials being used is one of the smartest things you can do for your long-term health.
A great dentist won’t be bothered by these questions. In fact, they’ll welcome them. We believe in building relationships based on trust and transparency. That’s why our door is always open for those conversations.
